EDM 104 Salt and Pepper Shakers

From Daily Drawing...
pencil first, then pen in large sketchbook

It took me quite awhile, over an hour to do this one, doesn't LOOK like it should have taken me so long, but I had a hard time figuring out how to get the raised squares of glass on the shakers to look right. in the morning light, they looked too boxy, but I don't want to go back in there and try again. I'm moving on...

EDM 101 Soap redux

From Daily Drawing...
Pencil, pen, watercolor wash in large sketchbook

I like this one a whole lot better! I have SO much to do this weekend in preparation for having family company, but I'm continuing to sketch everyday. Hope I can keep doing this next week too.

EDM 101 -- Soap, try again tomorrow!

From Daily Drawing...
Pen and pencil in Square HandBook

Parts of this are ok, but I really messed up the shadow of the shell soap, and I am too tired to redo it tonight. Do over tomorrow!

Funny how you don't see these things until it's scanned and up there -- the right side of the bar is slanted too much out to the right at the top corner, needs to be parallel with th eleft side. and the soap's shadow is way off. The shell soap is still in its plastic wrapper so it has a glint to it in the lamplight that I left without shading, but it doesn't gleam as it does in real life. Expecting too much of myself right now.

My favorite shoes

From Daily Drawing...
Ink and watercolor in Square HandBook

I'm considering this EDM challenge #62, draw a previous challenge in a medium you don't use much -- and since I'm a novice at all of this, i figure it counts. Here's my last attempt. Today I was on a roll -- I'm pleased with this shoe too, done on the facing page of the HandBook. Have I mentioned yet how much I love this sketchbook? It came highly recommended on the EverydayMatters yahoo group I purchased mine from Dick Blick, but there are other places to buy it. Going "over the edge" is great! and the pages buckle a bit with washes, but calm right down when dry. The square size is great, it easily scans, fits in most purses. neat. The only thing I wish it had were a pen/pencil holder. Small matter...

Grouping of Gourds Challenge 61

From Daily Drawing...
Pen in Square HandBook

Tired day today, no "me" time before the kids got up. I'm sketching always feeling apprehensive that I won't be allowed the time to concentrate and focus, so I do my sketches sloppily. But I know why it's happening. anyway, here's a blind contour of some ornamental gourds, and then I used the drawing simple shapes technique, to map out the space and then do the details, and for the kind of morning it is, I'm calling it DONE.

Diner Cup Extraordinaire

From Everyday Matt...
Ink and woodless colored pencils in Square HandBook

Here's a lovely cup and saucer set I recently "splurged" on at an estate sale -- I laid down $3 for this set because I loved it so much! It's a nice hefty weight, Homer Lauflin, made for diners/restaurants, and I just adore the colors and the pattern around it. It is a squarish cup, but now quite as angular as I've pictured it (wincing now as I look at it the next morning) I really like that I saw and tried to capture the reflection of the design of the saucer in the cup itself. This will be the Everyday Matters group Challenge #4. Draw your cup.

Pressed Glass Glass

From Daily Drawing...
Pen in Square HandBook

Everyday Matters Challenge no. 25. Draw a glass you drink from. This one is vintage iridescent gold festival glass, pressed glass -- note the seam on the side. The base is squarish. The sketch felt bare without some context, but I didn't want to fully sketch in the vase near it.

I wanna go HOME!

From Daily Drawing...
Wobbly pen in Square HandBook while dh drove car through torrential rain

I thought the "roaming" message on my cell phone display was oh so appropriate! Challenge no. 13. And here's another quick, waiting for lunch with the kids, sketch of a coffee bean jar...no it's not a bulb sprouting in a glass.

A 40-something hand

From Everyday Matt...
Ink in Square HandBook

Ok, here's a fairly accurate representation of my hand, wrinkles and all (but not hair -- I swear, the shading is not hair) Thanks to my lovely mother in law who encouraged me to get manicures to stop biting my nails -- and yes, after a couple of years, it's worked. I wouldn't have dared draw my hand before! Everydaymatters Challenge no. 10
